A scientific journey that began in the early 1950s inside a University of Wisconsin botany laboratory has produced the Kinerase skin care anti-aging treatment used most often today by physicians in North America.
The university researchers were trying to find the cellular mechanism that promotes new growth in plants, using tobacco stems for their test tissues. After traveling a twisting scientific trail and overcoming rivalries with researchers at other schools, they made a breakthrough by extracting an active factor from herring sperm DNA.
